Are Students Able to Transfer Mathematical Knowledge?

چکیده

The ability to use mathematics in other disciplines is generally expected of all science and engineering students. Anecdotal evidence suggests that many students lack this ability. While there is a substantial body of research dealing with the transfer of training, and the transfer of mathematical skills to problem solving in everyday life, there is very little relating to the transfer of mathematics to other scientific disciplines. This paper reports on the development and trialing of an instrument which can be used to research the ability of students to transfer mathematical skills and knowledge to other disciplines. The instrument consists of mathematical problems set in various contexts. All the problems involve exponential and logarithmic functions, and are based on scenarios from physics, microbiology and computer science. In each case, any discipline-specific knowledge required to solve the problem is given, so that all the problems can be solved with mathematical knowledge only. The problems were initially written by a physicist, a microbiologist and a computer scientist. The instrument has been trialed with 47 first year science students at the University of Sydney. Performance on the instrument has been correlated against final high school marks, first year university results, and subjects studied. These results are presented. The paper also discusses some of the interesting issues which arose from the collaboration of a mathematician with academics from three other scientific disciplines. For example, differences in the ways the physicist, the microbiologist and the computer scientist used mathematics were apparent. Also, their use of mathematics was often quite imprecise. Such issues have important implications for the teaching and learning of mathematics, both as a subject in its own right and within other disciplines.

as : Roberts , A . , ( 2004 ) Honours Thesis - Transfer of Mathematics Skills and Knowledge with First Year Science Students ( School of Physics , University of Sydney )

This project aimed to quantitatively measure the ability of first year science students to transfer their mathematical skills and knowledge to a physical context. An instrument used in earlier studies to measure transfer of mathematical knowledge was modified for this project, and tested with 49 student volunteers. A Transfer Index was developed to measure the degree of transfer of the students...

Mathematical Modeling of Heat Transfer for Steel Continuous Casting Process

Heat transfer mechanisms and the solidification process are simulated for a continuous casting machine and the geometric shape of the liquid pool is predicted considering different conditions. A heat transfer and solidification model is described for the continuous casting of steel slabs. The model has been established on the basis of the technical conditions of the slab caster in the con...

A longitudinal study on students' development and transfer of the concept of integration

We present results from the first two years of a project investigating how engineering students develop problem solving skills through their academic career. The project consists of a longitudinal study as well as cross-sectional studies in multiple courses in mathematics, physics and engineering. In this article, we focus on the transfer of knowledge from mathematics to physics courses. We tra...

Do Children Need Concrete Instantiations to Learn an Abstract Concept?

The effects of relevant concreteness on learning and transfer were investigated. Sixth grade students learned artificial instantiations of a simple mathematical concept. Some students were presented with instantiations that communicated concreteness relevant to the to-be-learned concept, while others learned generic instantiations involving abstract symbols. Results suggest that relevant concre...
